Best Mom-and-Son E-Bike Adventure
Charlotte to Pineville on the Greenway
Riding the Greenway with Mom
Some of the best adventures aren’t epic mountain climbs or week-long cycling tours.
Sometimes they’re simply a beautiful day spent with someone you love.
Recently, I had the opportunity to take a ride with my mom on our Specialized e-bikes
along the Carolina Thread Trail and Little Sugar Creek Greenway system connecting
Charlotte, North Carolina to Pineville. It turned into one of those memorable days that
remind you why cycling is such an incredible activity. Always take time to enjoy time
with your mom!
The route offered everything we could have hoped for—smooth paved paths, shaded
stretches beneath mature trees, scenic creek views, and opportunities to stop and
simply enjoy being outdoors together. One of the greatest things about e-bikes is that
they allow riders of different ages and fitness levels to enjoy the same ride comfortably.
The electric assist meant we could focus less on effort and more on conversation.
We spent much of the ride chatting about family, travel, frenemies and old memories
while pretty much effortlessly cruising along the greenway. Moments like that are worth
far more than any fitness metric recorded on a bike computer.
The Challenge: Charlotte Summer Heat
There was only one problem.
It was HOT.
Really hot.
Charlotte summers can be brutally humid, and while the e-bike assistance made
pedaling easier, the heat and humidity were still relentless. By the time we reached
Pineville, it was obvious that hydration and sun protection were just as important as our
bikes.
That experience got me thinking about what gear worked well—and what additional
gear would have made the ride even more comfortable.
Gear My Mom Used
Specialized Turbo E-Bike
The star of the day.
The pedal assist allowed us to maintain a comfortable pace while still getting exercise.
E-bikes are perfect for family rides because they eliminate many fitness-related barriers
and allow everyone to enjoy the journey.
Why I recommend it:
Smooth power delivery
Comfortable riding position
Excellent range
Makes longer rides accessible for all ages
Bike Helmet
Safety always comes first.
A properly fitted helmet is non-negotiable, regardless of age or experience level.
Recommended Features:
MIPS protection
Excellent ventilation
Adjustable fit system
Popular choices:
Giro Register MIPS
Specialized Align II MIPS
Smith Signal MIPS
Sunglasses
The Carolina sun was intense.
Good cycling sunglasses protected against UV rays, wind, and bugs while improving
overall comfort.
Features to look for:
Polarized lenses
Lightweight frame
Sweat-resistant nose pieces
Water Bottles
Hydration was critical.
We carried water bottles, and thankfully so. The conditions demanded frequent drinking
even with moderate effort.
Recommendation:
Minimum of two large bottles per rider on hot summer rides.
Gear She Should Have Used
Looking back, there are several items that would have made the ride significantly more
comfortable.
Insulated Water Bottle
Regular water quickly becomes warm during a North Carolina summer ride.
A vacuum-insulated cycling bottle helps keep water cooler much longer.
Recommended:
CamelBak Podium Ice
Polar Breakaway Insulated
Electrolyte Tablets
Sweat loss was substantial during this ride.
Water alone is often not enough on hot days.
Recommended products:
Nuun Sport
Liquid I.V.
LMNT
These help replace sodium and electrolytes lost through sweating.
Cooling Neck Gaiter
One item I wish we’d brought.
A cooling neck wrap soaked in cold water can significantly improve comfort during high
temperatures.
Why it’s useful:
Cools major blood vessels in the neck
Provides sun protection
Lightweight and inexpensive
Handlebar Phone Mount
We stopped several times to check directions.
A secure phone mount would have made navigation much easier.
Recommended:
Quad Lock
Peak Design Mobile Mount
Small Frame Bag
A compact frame bag would have kept essentials organized.
Perfect for:
Keys
Credit cards
Snacks
Sunscreen
Extra battery pack
Portable Bike Pump
Fortunately, we didn’t have a flat tire.
But every ride should include a mini pump or CO2 inflator.
Recommended:
Topeak Mini Morph
Lezyne Pocket Drive
Battery Pack
E-bike riders know range anxiety is real.
Although our Specialized bikes had plenty of battery for the trip, carrying a small power
bank for phones and electronics is always smart.
High-SPF Sports Sunscreen
Perhaps the biggest miss of the day.
The sun reflected off both the pavement and surrounding surfaces.
Recommended:
SPF 50+
Sweat resistant
Reapply every 90 minutes
Popular options:
Neutrogena Sport Face
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Sport
Sun Bum Original SPF 50
My Recommended Summer E-Bike Checklist
Before your next Charlotte-area greenway ride, pack:
✅ Helmet
✅ Cycling sunglasses
✅ Two water bottles
✅ Electrolyte tablets
✅ SPF 50 sunscreen
✅ Cooling neck gaiter
✅ Energy snacks
✅ Phone mount
✅ Mini pump
✅ Spare tube
✅ Multi-tool
✅ Portable battery pack
✅ Frame bag
Final Thoughts
The ride from Charlotte to Pineville wasn’t memorable because of the distance or the
technology. It was memorable because I got to spend quality time with my mom doing
something we both enjoy.
The Specialized e-bikes made the ride accessible and fun, but the real highlight was
sharing stories, laughing along the trail, and creating another family memory together.
If you’re considering an e-bike ride with a parent, spouse, or friend, don’t wait. Pick a
greenway, bring plenty of water, prepare for the heat, and enjoy the conversation.
Years from now, you probably won’t remember your average speed or battery level—but
you’ll remember who was riding beside you.

Proof That the Best Outdoor Adventures Don’t Always Need Two Wheels:
Grandfather Mountain with my Dad.
Sometimes the Best Adventures Happen Off the Bike. As much as I love cycling, some outdoor experiences remind us that adventure doesn’t always require a bike, a power meter, or a battery. Recently, I spent a day hiking Grandfather Mountain with my dad, and it became one of those experiences I’ll remember far longer than any ride statistic or Strava segment. Nestled in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Grandfather Mountain offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the Southeast. Towering cliffs, rugged trails, swinging bridges, and breathtaking views create an experience that challenges you physically while rewarding you with unforgettable vistas. More importantly, it gave me something increasingly rare in today’s busy world—an uninterrupted day with my dad.
No emails.
No conference calls.
No deadlines.
Just two generations sharing a trail together.
Why Grandfather Mountain is Special
There’s something about hiking that naturally slows life down.
Unlike biking, where conversations come and go between climbs and descents, hiking
creates long stretches where you simply walk side-by-side and talk.
As we worked our way along the mountain, we shared stories, discussed challenges,
talked about work, retirement, travel plans, and everything in between.
Those conversations became the highlight of the day.
The mountain was spectacular, but the company was even better.
Dad didn’t make it all the way to the top, but that was absolutely the right call. He deals
with vertigo, and if you know Grandfather Mountain, you know the upper trail ladders
can be steep, exposed, and intimidating. I pushed on to the summit, but he made the
smart decision to turn back before the final ladder section. Know your limits!
The Gear Dad Got Right
Like most experienced outdoorsmen, my dad came prepared.
Some pieces of gear made the day significantly more enjoyable.
Quality Hiking Boots
The rocky terrain on Grandfather Mountain can be unforgiving.
Dad wisely wore sturdy hiking boots with strong ankle support and aggressive tread.
Why they’re essential:
Better traction on wet rock
Reduced ankle injuries
Improved confidence on steep sections
Recommended Options
Merrell Moab 3 Mid
Salomon X Ultra (His Salomon’s are nearly as old as I am!)
Keen Targhee III
Lightweight Hiking Poles
At first glance they may seem unnecessary.
After a few miles of rocky terrain and elevation changes, they become invaluable.
Dad’s trekking poles helped:
Reduce knee strain
Improve balance
Increase stability during descents
Recommended
Black Diamond Trail Series
LEKI Legacy Lite
Moisture-Wicking Shirt
Cotton is the enemy on warm-weather hikes.
Dad wore a lightweight performance shirt that kept him surprisingly comfortable despite
substantial climbing.
Look for:
UPF protection
Moisture management
Ventilation panels
Daypack
A small daypack carried the essentials without becoming a burden.
Contents included:
Water
Snacks
Extra layer
First aid basics
Simple but effective.
Wide-Brim Hat
A surprisingly underrated piece of hiking equipment.
When you move in and out of tree cover all day, sun protection matters.
A quality hiking hat reduces:
Sun exposure
Eye strain
Fatigue
The Gear We Wish We’d Brought
Every outdoor trip teaches lessons.
Grandfather Mountain was no exception.
Looking back, several items would have made the day even better.
Hydration Bladder
We carried water bottles, but a hydration reservoir would have made drinking more
convenient throughout the hike.
When water is easier to access, you naturally drink more frequently.
Recommended
Osprey Hydraulics Reservoir
CamelBak Crux
Electrolyte Mix
Much like cycling in Charlotte’s summer heat, hiking in the mountains can still result in
significant fluid loss.
Water alone isn’t always enough.
A simple electrolyte packet could have helped maintain energy and prevent muscle
cramps.
Recommended
LMNT
Nuun Sport
Liquid I.V.
Lightweight Rain Jacket
Mountain weather changes quickly.
Fortunately, we stayed dry.
However, conditions can shift rapidly at higher elevations.
A packable rain shell is worth carrying even when the forecast looks favorable.
Recommended
Patagonia Torrentshell
Outdoor Research Helium
Better Trail Snacks
We had basic snacks, but higher-quality fuel would have been appreciated.
Ideal hiking foods include:
Trail mix
Energy bars
Dried fruit
Beef jerky
Nut butter packets
A little extra fuel goes a long way when climbing.
GPS Hiking Watch
A good hiking watch would have helped track:
Elevation gain
Distance
Route progress
Weather alerts
Recommended
Garmin Fenix
Garmin Instinct
Coros Apex
Phone Power Bank
Nothing drains a phone battery faster than taking pictures and using GPS all day.
A compact power bank provides peace of mind.
Recommended
Anker PowerCore
Lightweight Sit Pad
This was the item I missed most.
After several hours on the trail, finding a scenic overlook practically begs for a
comfortable place to sit.
A foldable foam sit pad weighs almost nothing but dramatically improves break times.
Sunglasses with Better Coverage
Mountain views are incredible.
Squinting through bright sunlight isn’t.
A quality pair of polarized sunglasses improves comfort and enhances scenery.

Oakley

My Grandfather Mountain Hiking Checklist
Before your next mountain adventure, I’d recommend packing:
✅ Hiking boots
✅ Trekking poles
✅ Backpack
✅ 2-3 liters of water
✅ Electrolyte tablets
✅ Energy snacks
✅ Lightweight rain jacket
✅ Sunscreen
✅ Sunglasses
✅ Hiking watch
✅ Power bank
✅ First-aid kit
✅ Sit pad
✅ Camera or smartphone
Why Outdoor Time Matters More Than Ever
One lesson keeps repeating itself.
Some of my favorite outdoor memories have very little to do with the actual activity.
The mountains provided stunning scenery.
The trail provided exercise.
The gear made the experience more comfortable.
But the memories came from sharing the journey.
As parents get older and schedules become busier, those opportunities become
increasingly valuable.
You don’t have to summit a mountain or ride 50 miles on an e-bike.
You just have to get outside together.

Grandfather Mountain delivered incredible views, but the real reward was spending a
day on the trail with Dad. Years from now, I probably won’t remember exactly how many
miles we hiked or how much elevation we climbed. What I’ll remember is walking beside
him, sharing stories, and enjoying the mountains together. And that’s an adventure
worth taking every time.
